SFSonline: Take our survey

We would love to get your feedback on our recent online programme; we have put together a very short survey and would invite responses whether you watched some or all of the programme or weren’t able to participate.

It’s completely anonymous and doesn’t require any signup to Survey Monkey. Click the link that follows to take our survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BRCJCDF

In all we screened seven titles from mid April to the end of May – which are still available to stream via our Programme page – providing a sense of continuity while we all got to grips with the Covid-19 lockdown.

Our thanks to our screening partner Access Cinema for pulling together a programme at such short notice together with the distributors and streaming platforms, 606 Distribution, Break Out Pictures and Modern Films for sharing in the scheme.

SFSonline: The Peanut Butter Falcon

This week, we screen The Peanut Butter Falcon, our final film in the #SFSonline programme. We’ll be tuning in the usual time, at 8pm, tomorrow evening. If you’d like to join us, you can find the link below.

This amiable buddy movie was a hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Zak (Zack Gottsagen) has Down’s Syndrome and has been in a nursing home for two years when he stages an escape, aided by an older inmate (Bruce Dern). Hiding himself upon a fishing boat owned by Tyler (Shia LeBeouf), he is on a mission to attend a wrestling training camp he has seen on an aged VHS tape and become the titular Peanut Butter Falcon. As the duo team up, they are pursued by nursing home volunteer Eleanor (Dakota Johnson).

One of the rare films to allow a person with a disability centre stage, Gottsagen’s multilayered, often hilarious performance is at the heart of this winning story of finding yourself.

This title is streaming from Modern Films who will share a percentage of the rental fee from your purchase back to us, to ensure we receive this support, enter ‘Sligo’ in the discount code field during the checkout process. This is a change from their normal process for anyone who has used the platform before.

SFSonline: Mr. Jones

We are going to draw our online cinema programme #AccessCinemaAtHome to a close and finish at the end of this month. That leaves us with two movies to sign-off with. Our penultimate screening is Mr. Jones, a stirring drama based on the real-life story of the Welsh journalist who uncovered Stalin’s genocidal famine in Ukraine in the 1930’s. It’s from the Academy Award winning director Agniezka Holland (Europa Europa, In Darkness) and comes to us via Modern Films. Join us at 8pm this Thursday for a communal watch-along while streaming at home.

Based on a true story that inspired George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’. James Norton stars as courageous Welsh journalist Gareth Jones who witnessed scenes of man-made starvation in Ukraine in the 1930s and brought it to the world’s attention.

SFSonline: Styx

In this week’s instalment of #AccessCinemaAtHome, German drama Styx is our offering.

Styx depicts the transformation of a strong woman torn from her contented world during a sailing trip. When she becomes the only person to come to the aid of a group of refugees shipwrecked on the high seas, she is shown the limits of her importance and of the empathy of her cultural milieu. She is left slipping impotently from one nightmare to the next, and by the end she is forced to recognize that there is no way to counter the cruelties of real life. Only chance can save her.

Our Spring programme normally ends in April but as the Covid-19 lockdown continues and restrictions are still in place on how far we can venture from our home and the number of people we can socialise with, we will continue with our virtual cinema programme for the foreseeable future at our usual 8pm slot on Thursdays. This programme has been enabled by our screening partner Access Cinema, who are doing trojan work behind the scenes to source distributors and new films for us to show.

The distributors in turn share a percentage of the rental fee back to us, to ensure we receive this support, select our name in the dropdown box when making your purchase on the 606 Distribution site.

Remember to tag us and use our hashtag #SFSonline through any of our social media platforms to let us know you’re watching.
