Synopsis

From the Oscar-nominated directors of Loving Vincent, Hugh Welchman and Dorota Kobiela, comes another beautiful hand-painted animation. Unfolding over the course of four seasons, in the 19th-century Polish village of Lipce, where the rhythm of daily life is attuned to the natural cycle of the harvest. A peasant girl, Jagna (Kamila Urzedowska), is forced to marry a much older, wealthy farmer, Boryna (Mirosław Baka), despite her love for his son, Antek (Robert Gulaczyk). Drawn into a torrid affair, whilst her newfound status unnerves the villagers, Janga becomes the object of envy, and hate. Strong-willed and free-spirited, Janga must fight to preserve her independence.

Adapted from Polish author Wladyslaw Reymont’s Nobel Prize-winning novel, The Peasants is a ravishingly beautiful visual triumph.
